Working with a dietitian

It’s totally normal to have a few questions. These are some that I get from clients before they start working with me.  Of course, if you have more questions, let me know!  My contact info is at the bottom of this page, or send me a DM on instagram @thedirectdietitian

I’ve joined diet programs before – what’s different about working with a dietitian?

I practice as a ‘non-diet dietitian’, which means I help you build skills & knowledge around food and healthy eating that you can add in to your every-day meals.  I don’t encourage unnecessary restrictions, food rules, or a lot of counting or measuring.

I work with clients to find approachable ways to fit healthy eating into their everyday life, and my goal is to help you build lasting habits that go way beyond any short term diet.

Will you give me a meal plan or list of foods I should or shouldn’t eat?

Yes and no – as you may suspect as a non-diet dietitian, I’m not in the practice of telling people what they must eat, nor do I tell you to never eat a food.

That being said, I love helping my clients build healthy meal plans, using helpful resources – including food and meal idea lists.  After working with me, clients walk away not only with more meal ideas & nutrition knowledge, but also the skills to keep repeating and building meal plans for years to come.

Who will be working with me directly through the program?

It’s me, Rebecca!  I’m a registered dietitian with over a decade of experience working with clients from all walks of life.  If you’d like to know more about me, check out more info about me in the ‘About me’ section.

We can also connect on social media – follow me at @thedirectdietitian

How do I pay for the dietitian consults?

Payments can be done securely with your credit card on the Practice Better platform, or via eTransfer.

How do I know if I have coverage for a dietitian through my employer/health benefits?

Check your health benefits with either your insurance company or your HR department. You can ask the following questions to help clarify:

  • Does your health benefits coverage include services from a Registered Dietitian?
  • If so, is there a limit to how much they will cover?
  • Does the insurance provider require a note/referral from a doctor, in order to be covered for Dietitian services?

Of course, if you have questions with any of this, don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly for support!

I have coverage for dietitian services with my health benefits – how do I access this?

That’s great!  Health benefits typically cover 1:1 services (although this may vary on the insurance provider).  We may be able to direct bill your insurance provider.  Each insurance provider has different rules for direct billing for dietitians, so this service isn’t always available.  After you book your first 1:1 session with me, you can discuss more about whether this is an option for you.  Companies usually offering direct billing include (but are not limited to):

  • Canada Life
  • Saskatchewan Blue Cross
  • Green Shield Canada
  • Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan
  • Don’t see your insurance listed?  Ask me!

I’m still not too sure – how can I find out more?

Absolutely!  Making a commitment to work on your health is a big step, and if you’d like more information before you book, I’d love to chat with you over the phone.  Reach out to me at rebecca(at)directdietitian(dot)ca to set up a call soon.
